The answer is that ab exercises burn belly fat, but are not the best exercises for this purpose. The reason is twofold:
1. the user cannot burn fat from a specific body part with exercises alone, then it doesn't matter if you work your ABS or not, you lose the fat around the body as a single unit.
2. Ab Exercises burn the fat, but there are other, much more effective workouts in terms of fat burning.
The real way to burn the most fat faster ab is to do strength training that involves more than one group of muscles, exercises multi-jointed like squats, lunges, push-ups, chin ups, chest press and so forth. These exercises burn more fat strength exercises ab. How the body burns fat as a single unit, your belly fat also decrease.
What all those people in gyms all over the world who spend hours doing ab exercises do not realize that until there is belly fat no matter how strong your muscles are, will never show you how they're covered in grease. Only when you reduce and burn the excess flab stomach muscles will show.
Thus, belly exercises are important, but not as fat burners, just like muscle strengthening. They are much less useful for multi jointed exercises. Thus, the stomach exercises, but not spend too much time on them.
